10 1/4" gauge 2-6-4T locomotive, styled after the 2ft gauge locomotive 'Mountaineer' on the Ffestiniog Railway.

Completed by Brian Elliott and Roger Cockfield in 2015, it was unused until acquired for the Watford Miniature Railway in 2023. Following basic commissioning at Denver Light Railway, it has been steamed around half a dozen times at Watford before being set aside for some modifications to improve its usability on a commercial railway. Unfortunately we simply have not had the time to progress with the modifications, so are making the pragmatic decision to offer it for sale to a new home which would be able to use and modify the loco sooner than we can.

The chassis is based on the 'Sweet Creek' design supplied by Roll Models in the USA. Welded steel boiler manufactured by Bell Boilers. Stainless steel water tanks. Screw reverser. Twin injectors fitted to right hand side plus hand water pump. Steam brake and hand brake currently fitted, although see later notes! Large bunker provides driver seating within the loco, there is a small coal bunker under the seat but we found it easier to use a bucket of coal on the footplate. Removable rear cab section for display.

Work/modifications we had planned - you may wish to undertake some or all of these:

  • Redesign the brake rigging. We had found the brakes would drag and sometimes jam on in original form. The original steel brake blocks have been removed and are included with the loco, we will also supply replacement cast iron brake blocks.
  • Fit new front coupling
  • Replace fine pitch screw reverser with a pole reverser
  • Replace automatic drain cocks with steam or manually operated drain cocks
  • Remove large rear bunker and construct driving tender
  • Extend injector water valve handles (currently mounted in the floor)

Our experience with testing shows the loco steams very well and will happily pull a 9-10 coach train. Hydraulic boiler inspection valid until November 2033, the annual steam inspection has currently lapsed but we can arrange for another to ensure the loco is ready to go.

Please note we will be keeping the Evelyn nameplates currently fitted, we have the original Mountaineer nameplates which will come with the loco.
